How To Use Amitriptyline

Amitriptyline comes in the form of a tablet to be taken by mouth with water. It is taken either as a single dose or 2-4 split doses during the day. You can take this medicine with or without food. Try to take your medication at approximately the same time(s) every day.

Read the instructions on your prescription label carefully. Take amitriptyline exactly as prescribed. Do not take too little or too much amitriptyline or take it more or less frequently than advised.

Doctors usually start with a low dose of amitriptyline and slowly increase the dose over a period of weeks. Follow the dosing instructions carefully. It can take several weeks for you to get the benefits of this medicine. Continue taking amitriptyline even if you feel well. Remember that while amitriptyline will help to control your depression symptoms, it will not cure your condition. Do not stop taking amitriptyline without speaking to your healthcare provider first. Abruptly stopping this medicine can lead to withdrawal symptoms and/or worsening depression. Your doctor will tell you how to gradually come off the medicine by taking lower doses.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of amitriptyline, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store amitriptyline at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused amitriptyline should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw amitriptyline in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded amitriptyline is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
