What are the pros and cons of atenolol (Tenormin)?

  • Atenolol is generally well tolerated and has fewer side effects than some other beta blockers.
  • It is the first-choice drug to prevent angina (chest pain) and treat an acute heart attack.

  • Atenolol is not safe for use by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • This medication can mask symptoms of low blood sugar and overactive thyroid.
  • Atenolol is not a first-choice medication to treat high blood pressure unless a person has heart disease. 
  • Suddenly stopping atenolol can worsen chest pain and increase the risk of a heart attack.
