How To Use Azathioprine

Azathioprine tablet should be taken by mouth with water 1-2 times a day after meals.

Carefully read the prescription label and take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not take a higher or lower dose or take it more or less frequently than prescribed.

If the azathioprine has been prescribed after a kidney transplant, your healthcare professional may start you on a high dose and gradually reduce the dose.

Azathioprine prevents organ rejection after a transplant only if you keep taking the medicine. Continue taking azathioprine even if you don’t have any symptoms. Do not stop taking the medicine without talking to your healthcare professional first.

If you are taking azathioprine to control the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), your doctor may start you on a lower dose and gradually increase your dose over a period of several weeks. Your doctor may reduce your dose if your condition is well controlled. It can take up to 12 weeks to get the full benefits of this medicine for control of RA.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of azathioprine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store azathioprine at controlled room temperature (between 20-25° C or 68-77° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired azathioprine should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw azathioprine in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded azathioprine is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
