How To Use Bimatoprost (Latisse)

Bimatoprost comes in the form of a liquid solution. Try to apply bimatoprost before bedtime at approximately the same time daily. Use the sterile applicators to apply the medicine once a day in the evening at the base of the upper lashes. Do not use a cotton swab or any other applicator or brush to apply bimatoprost. Also, do not use this medicine on your lower lid or lower eyelid or on broken or irritated skin of the upper eyelid. Use a tissue to blot any excess medicine from around the upper eyelid skin. Repeated contact with bimatoprost can lead to unwanted growth of hair in this or some other unintended surface. If the medicine gets into your eyes, it is not harmful and you do not need to rinse it out. Here are the steps to apply bimatoprost topical:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water.
  • Do not touch the sterile applicator or the bottle tip with your fingers or anything else.
  • Take 1 drop of the medicine near the tip, but not on the tip of the applicator, while holding the applicator horizontally.
  • Apply the medicine across the upper eyelid margin (at the base of the eyelashes where they meet the skin), like you would apply liquid eyeliner, moving the applicator carefully from the inner to the outer part of the upper eyelid margin. Discard the applicator after using it on one eyelid.
  • Use a tissue to blot any excess medicine.
  • Apply bimatoprost solution to the other eyelash using a fresh applicator.

Read the prescription label carefully and use bimatoprost as instructed. Do not use a higher or lower dose or use it more frequently than your provider tells you to. Using this medicine more frequently than once daily will not lead to lash growth or an increase in eyelash length or thickness.

It takes a minimum of 1 month and up to 4 months to notice an improvement in eyelash growth. Continue using bimatoprost if you don’t see any change in eyelash hairs yet. This medicine increases eyelash growth only as long as you are applying it. If you stop applying daily topical bimatoprost, your eyelashes will slowly return to their pre-treatment level and previous appearance.

Missed dose: If you forget to apply bimatoprost solution, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not apply extra bimatoprost to make up for a missed application.

Storage: Store bimatoprost at a temperature between 2-25°C (36-77°F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused bimatoprost should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw bimatoprost in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded bimatoprost is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
