What may interact with Clarithromycin?

Do not take this medicine with any of the following medications:

-certain medicines for fungal infections like fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole
-cisapride
-dronedarone
-naloxegol
-pimozide
-thioridazine

This medicine may also interact with the following medications:

-birth control pills
-carbamazepine
-certain medicines for anxiety or sleep like alprazolam or triazolam
-certain medicines for cholesterol like atorvastatin, lovastatin, simvastatin
-certain medicines for irregular heart beat like amiodarone, disopyramide, flecainide, procainamide, quinidine
-certain medicines that treat or prevent clots like warfarin
-colchicine
-cyclosporine
-digoxin
-dofetilide
-ergot alkaloids like ergotamine, dihydroergotamine
-other antibiotics like grepafloxacin, rifabutin, sparfloxacin
-other medicines that prolong the QT interval (cause an abnormal heart rhythm)
-ritonavir
-sildenafil
-terfenadine
-theophylline
-zidovudine
-ziprasidone

What should I tell my health care provider before I take Clarithromycin?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

-heart disease
-history of irregular heartbeat
-kidney disease
-liver disease
-myasthenia gravis
-an unusual or allergic reaction to clarithromycin, other macrolide antibiotics, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
-pregnant or trying to get pregnant
-breast-feeding

What should I watch for while using Clarithromycin?

Tell your doctor or health care provider if your symptoms do not improve.

This medicine may cause serious skin reactions. They can happen weeks to months after starting the medicine. Contact your health care provider right away if you notice fevers or flu-like symptoms with a rash. The rash may be red or purple and then turn into blisters or peeling of the skin. Or, you might notice a red rash with swelling of the face, lips or lymph nodes in your neck or under your arms.

Do not treat diarrhea with over the counter products. Contact your doctor if you have diarrhea that lasts more than 2 days or if it is severe and watery.

If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar carefully while on this medicine.

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Protect from light. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
