How To Use Clindamycin (Cleocin)

Clindamycin is available as an oral capsule or liquid to take by mouth 3-4 times a day as prescribed.

Read the prescription label carefully and take clindamycin exactly as instructed by your doctor. Do not take a higher or lower dose of this medicine or take it more or less frequently than prescribed.

Try to take clindamycin at around the same time every day. If you are taking the oral liquid, shake the bottle well before use. If you are taking clindamycin capsules, swallow the capsules with a full glass of water to avoid throat irritation.

You should start to feel better after a few days of taking clindamycin. Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or get worse after starting antibiotic treatment with clindamycin. Continue taking your medicine and finish the course of clindamycin as prescribed by your doctor even if you feel well. Skipping doses or stopping an antibiotic too soon can lead to incomplete treatment of your bacterial infection. Your infection could come back and/or be harder to treat due to drug-resistant bacteria.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of clindamycin, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store clindamycin at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired clindamycin should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw clindamycin in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded clindamycin is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program.
