Clindamycin (Cleocin) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Clindamycin can cause throat irritation. Take the capsule with a full glass of water to prevent this from happening. Also, avoid laying down after taking the pill.

  • Finish the prescribed course of clindamycin as directed by your healthcare professional, even if you start to feel better. Failure to do so can lead to incomplete treatment of your bacterial infection. Your infection could come back and be harder to treat in the future.

  • If you are taking clindamycin solution, measure the dose using a dose-measuring device such as a syringe or cup. Do not use a household spoon for this purpose as it can result in wrong dosing.

  • You can store the oral solution of clindamycin at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. Discard the bottle after this time period as the medicine may not be effective. Do not store liquid clindamycin in the refrigerator as it can become thick and difficult to pour.
