How To Use Clobetasol (Clobex)

Clobetasol topical is available as a gel, cream, ointment, lotion, spray and foam for use on the skin and as a spray, foam, solution (liquid), and shampoo for application to the scalp. Clobetasol cream, gel, ointment, lotion, foam, solution (liquid), and spray should be applied to the skin 2 times daily for 2-4 weeks. Clobetasol shampoo should be applied once a day.

Read the prescription label or package instructions carefully and use clobetasol as instructed. Do not use more or less of this medication.

Apply a small amount of cream, ointment, gel, lotion, foam, or spray to cover the affected area of skin with a thin, even layer, and then gently rub it in.

To apply the foam, spray, or solution (liquid) to your scalp, part your hair, put a little medication on the affected area, and then gently rub it in. Until the medication has dried, refrain from washing and rubbing the region.

For using clobetasol shampoo on your scalp, you should part your hair, apply a small quantity of the clobetasol shampoo to the affected area of your scalp, then gently rub it in. After 15 minutes, wet your hair, create a lather with your fingers, and then thoroughly rinse the shampoo out of your hair and rinse from any other body parts that may have come in contact. While the shampoo is still on your hair, avoid covering it with a shower or bathing cap, or towel. After using and removing clobetasol shampoo, you can wash your hair normally.

Do not use clobetasol on other parts of your body or treat other skin conditions unless your doctor tells you to.

You should see improvement in your condition during the first 2 weeks of your treatment. Call your doctor for medical advice if you don’t notice any improvement or if your symptoms get worse. Do not use clobetasol more often than directed or for longer than prescribed by your health care professional. Doing so may increase the risk of side effects.

Clobetasol foam is flammable. Do not use it near an open fire or flames. Do not smoke until the foam has completely dried on your skin.

Avoid getting clobetasol topical in your mouth or eyes, and never swallow it. Unless specifically instructed by your doctor, avoid using it in the genital and rectal areas, as well as in skin folds and armpits.

Do not apply clobetasol on open wounds or on broken or infected skin.

Avoid using any other skin creams or preparations on the treated area without consulting your doctor

Do not bandage or wrap the treated skin area unless your doctor instructs you that you should. This can increase side effects.

You should wash your hands before and after using clobetasol topical unless you are using it to treat the skin on your hands.

Missed dose: If you forget to apply clobetasol, do it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed dose and apply the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply more medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store clobetasol at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight in a tightly closed container that it came in. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired clobetasol topical should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw clobetasol in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded clobetasol is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program.
