How To Use Doxepin

Doxepin comes in the form of a capsule and oral solution to take by mouth 1-3 times a day. You can take this medicine with or without food. Try to take your medication at approximately the same time(s) every day to maintain steady doxepin plasma concentrations. This will also help you to remember to take the medicine.

The oral solution is a concentrate. Use the dropper provided with the medicine to measure the dose. Mix the concentrate in 120 mL (half a glass) of water, milk, or fruit juice (do not mix in fizzy drinks or sodas). Drink the mixture immediately.

Read the instructions on your prescription label carefully. Take doxepin exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency of this medicine without your doctor’s approval.

Your doctor will probably start you on low-dose doxepin therapy and adjust the dose based on your response and clinical effects. Continue taking doxepin even if you feel well. Doxepin can help to control your depression symptoms but will not cure the underlying condition. Do not stop doxepin without talking to your doctor first. Stopping this medicine abruptly can lead to withdrawal symptoms like insomnia, irritability, and worsening depression. Your doctor will tell you how to gradually reduce your doxepin dose.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of doxepin, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store doxepin at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused doxepin should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw doxepin in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded doxepin is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
