Furosemide (Lasix) tips from pharmacists

  • Furosemide is a fast-acting diuretic that causes you to urinate more within an hour of taking it. The effects last for 6-8 hours. Avoid taking furosemide later in the day to prevent nighttime urination.

  • Diuretic therapy with furosemide can make you feel dizzy, especially if you get up too quickly from bed. This can put you at risk of falls and injury. Make sure you arise slowly from the bed and rest your feet on the floor for a few minutes before standing.

  • Keep all your appointments with your healthcare provider while on this medicine. Your doctor may give you potassium supplements if furosemide is causing low potassium levels, or they may switch you to potassium-sparing diuretics.

  • Avoid unnecessary sun exposure and use good sun protection while taking furosemide because this medicine can increase sun sensitivity.
