What is hydroxyzine?

Hydroxyzine pamoate is available as a brand (Vistaril) and generic medication.  Hydroxyzine is a prescription antihistamine used to treat allergic reactions such as pruritus (itchy skin) and atopic dermatitis. Due to its sedating effects, hydroxyzine can provide short-term symptomatic relief of anxiety and tension. Hydroxyzine is also used as a sedative with other medications before and during general anesthesia.

Hydroxyzine hydrochloride (hydroxyzine HCl) and hydroxyzine pamoate have the same active ingredient. Hydroxyzine HCl is only available as a generic; the brand name Atarax was discontinued.

Who can take hydroxyzine?
