What are the pros and cons of loratadine?

  • Once-daily dosing - great for compliance
  • Provides quick relief of allergy symptoms for both adults and children 
  • Available as an over-the-counter generic format a lower price
  • Well-tolerated by most people, with very minimal adverse effects 
  • Does not have a lot of drug or food interactions
  • Typically causes less drowsiness than other antihistamines, especially the older generations

  • Dose adjustment is needed for patients with kidney or liver problems.
  • Not for use for children under 2 years old
  • Only to be used for temporary relief of allergy symptoms; not the ideal option for chronic, daily allergy symptoms.
