How should I take lorazepam?

Use lorazepam exactly as prescribed. Follow all directions on the prescription label and any medication guides if provided. Never take a larger or smaller amount than the prescribed dose. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

Lorazepam is a schedule IV controlled substance. Never share this medication with anyone, especially if that person has a history of alcohol or drug abuse or addiction. Misuse of controlled substances can cause addiction, overdose, and even death. Keep lorazepam in a secured place where it is not easily accessible by other people. Selling or giving away this medication is illegal.

If you are using the oral concentrate solution, use an oral syringe or medicine cup for the most accurate dosing. Do not use household items such as kitchen spoons. Mix the liquid medicine with water, juice, or applesauce and pudding. Swallow the mixture right away; do not save it for later use.

Do not cut, crush, break, or chew lorazepam extended-release capsules. You should swallow the capsule whole.

If you have problems swallowing, you can open the capsule and sprinkle the content on applesauce. Swallow the mixture without chewing and drink a full glass of water afterward.

Do not discontinue lorazepam suddenly. Sudden discontinuation of lorazepam can cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms that can be life-threatening, particularly after long-term use.

Missed dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the amount or take more than prescribed to make up for the missed dose. Contact your doctor immediately and inform them if you have missed more than one dose or are unsure about what to do.

Storage: Keep the medication in its original container; keep it tightly closed, out of reach of children, pets, and other people. Lorazepam is a controlled substance and should not be shared with anyone. Many people store their medications in the bathroom; this is not recommended due to moisture and heat. Store the liquid form (oral concentrate solution) in the refrigerator.

Unused medicine: Like other prescription medications, do not consume lorazepam after expiration. However, since lorazepam is a controlled substance, the best way to dispose of this medication is through the Drug Take-Back Programs sponsored by FDA. You can inquire for more information about these programs through local pharmacies. You can also learn more about proper medication disposal.
