How To Use Lovastatin

Lovastatin oral comes in the form of regular tablets to be taken once or twice daily and extended release tablets to be taken once daily at bedtime. Try to take your lovastatin tablets at around the same time every day.

Read the prescription label carefully and take lovastatin oral exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without consulting your provider.

Swallow the lovastatin extended-release tablets whole without cutting, crushing, or chewing them.

Your doctor may start you on a lower lovastatin dose and gradually increase the dose every 4 weeks, as needed.

Remember, you need to follow diet and exercise recommendations along with statin therapy. Statins are only effective in lowering cholesterol when you eat a healthy (low-fat, low-cholesterol) diet and get regular exercise.

Continue taking lovastatin regularly even if you don’t have any symptoms. High cholesterol levels may not cause any symptoms and may only be found on blood tests. Your risk of cardiovascular disease increases if your cholesterol levels are not controlled. Do not stop taking lovastatin without talking to your doctor.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of lovastatin, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store lovastatin at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired lovastatin should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw lovastatin in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded lovastatin is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program.
