Directions

How should I take pantoprazole?

Take this medication exactly as prescribed. Follow all directions on the prescription label and any medication guides if provided. Never take a larger or smaller amount than the prescribed dose.

Pantoprazole is not used for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms.

Pantoprazole can be taken by mouth or administered intravenously (into a vein). Usually, the intravenous administration of pantoprazole is done in hospital settings.

Pantoprazole can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole; do not chew, cut, split, or crush them.

If you have trouble swallowing a pantoprazole 40 mg tablet, you can take two 20 mg tablets instead.

Instructions for the use of pantoprazole granules (for oral suspension):

  • It is best to take the granules 30 minutes before meals.
  • Mix granules with one teaspoon (5 mL) of applesauce or apple juice.
  • Do not mix with other foods or liquids.
  • After mixing, you should use the dose within 10 minutes.
  • Do not chew or cut the granules.
  • Pantoprazole granules can be used with people who have feeding tubes. The feeding tubes (nasogastric or NG tube) should be flushed after pantoprazole administration.

This medication is intended to be used at the lowest dose for the shortest amount of time needed to treat your condition.

Finish the whole course of pantoprazole as prescribed by your doctor. Even if your symptoms have improved or resolved, do not stop taking the medication.

Like other proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), pantoprazole can cause positive urine screening tests for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Another confirmatory testing method should be considered to verify positive test results. Tell your doctor or laboratory staff that you are taking pantoprazole.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions, and let your doctor know if your symptoms get worse or do not improve.

Missed dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the amount or take more than prescribed to make up for the missed dose. Let your doctor know immediately if you have missed more than one dose or are unsure about what to do.

Storage: Keep the medication in its original container; keep it tightly closed, out of reach of children, pets, and other people. Like any other prescription medication, pantoprazole should not be shared with anyone. Many people store their medications in the bathroom; this is not recommended due to moisture and heat.

Unused medicine: Like other prescription medications, do not consume pantoprazole after the expiration date. This prescription drug is intended for your use only. Unneeded medicines should be disposed of appropriately to prevent children, pets, and other people from getting to them. Your local pharmacy can provide information about medication drug take-back programs. You can also learn more about proper medication disposal.
