How To Use Tobramycin
Tobramycin comes in the form of an ophthalmic solution to be instilled every 4-8 hours and an eye ointment to be applied 2-4 times a day. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully. Do not use more or less of the medicine or use it more or less frequently than prescribed. If you still have symptoms of eye infection after you finish tobramycin eye drops or ointment, call your doctor. Do not use it for prolonged or repeated periods without your doctor’s approval.
Steps for the application of eye drops
Wash your hands well with soap and water before you instill the eye drops. Make sure the dropper tip is not damaged in any way. Do not touch the dropper tip to anything, including your eye or hand, to avoid contamination.
To apply the eye drops, tilt your head back and pull your lower lid down with your index finger to make a small pocket. Hold the dropper tip close to your eye but do not touch the eye. Look up and squeeze the dropper to release one drop of medicine into the pocket in your lower eyelid. Gently close your eye for 2-3 minutes with your head tilted down. Avoid blinking or squeezing your lids. Apply gentle pressure on the tear duct. Wipe excess fluid with a tissue. Wait at least 5 minutes before applying another drop to the same eye. Replace the dropper in the bottle right away. Do not rinse the dropper tip or wipe it with anything. Wash your hands again.
Steps for the application of eye ointment
Have someone apply the ointment for you or stand in front of a mirror. Wash your hands with soap and water before applying the eye ointment. Do not touch the tip of the tube against anything, including your eye.
Look up and hold the tube between your thumb and index finger, close to your eye, but without touching it. Brace the other fingers against your nose or cheek. Pull the lower lid down to form a small pocket. Place a 1/2-inch ribbon of ointment in the pocket. Look down and close your eye for 1-2 minutes. Replace the cap on the tube of ointment right away to avoid contamination. Wipe excess ointment with a tissue. Wash your hands again.
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of tobramycin ophthalmic, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and apply the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store tobramycin ophthalmic at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused tobramycin ophthalmic should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw tobramycin in the trash or flush it down the toilet.
