Acetaminophen Tips from Pharmacists

  • Make sure you do not take more than 3,000 to 4,000 mg of acetaminophen in one day from all products combined.

  • The orally disintegrating tablet or powder form of acetaminophen can be placed directly on the tongue. It will dissolve almost immediately, and you can then swallow the medicine.

  • If you are giving liquid acetaminophen to a child for pain relief or fever, use dosing devices like a syringe or cup to measure the dose accurately. Using a household spoon can result in the wrong dose.

  • Store acetaminophen suppositories in a cool, dry place to prevent them from melting. Open the foil wrapper of the suppository only when you are ready to use it.

  • Contact your healthcare provider if your pain is no better after 10 days or your fever is still present after 3 days of taking acetaminophen.

  • Do not take acetaminophen if you are a heavy drinker (3 or more alcoholic beverages per day).
