  • Acetaminophen is safe for use by children.
  • Acetaminophen is less likely to cause upset stomach, stomach bleeding, ulcers, bruising, and bleeding compared to ibuprofen and aspirin.
  • Compared to ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), acetaminophen is a better option for people with severe renal impairment or kidney disease.

  • Acetaminophen can treat minor pain and reduce fever, but it does not lessen swelling and inflammation.
  • It may not work well for moderate to severe pain.
  • Acetaminophen may not be safe for people with hepatic impairment (reduced liver function) or heavy alcohol use. 
  • Many non-prescription pain relief combination medications contain acetaminophen, and you need to be careful not to overdose.
