What is Arimidex?

Arimidex (ur i muh deks) is a hormone therapy drug. It belongs to a group of medicines called aromatase inhibitors. It is used to treat early and advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women along with other treatments like surgery and radiation.

There may be other uses of Arimidex - your doctor or pharmacist can give you further information.

Who can use Arimidex?

Arimidex is used in postmenopausal women (women who have experienced the change of life and stopped getting their monthly menstrual periods). This is because Arimidex works by limiting the amount of estrogen produced in the body by the adrenal glands. In postmenopausal women, the adrenal glands are the largest source of estrogen. Arimidex doesn't work in premenopausal women (women still getting their periods) because before menopause, the ovaries make most of the estrogen.
