Cabergoline Uses

Cabergoline is used to treat hyperprolactinemia or high levels of prolactin hormone in the body. Prolactin is necessary for milk production in women who are breastfeeding. However, high serum prolactin levels can cause problems such as infertility, bone loss, and sexual dysfunction in men and in women who are not breastfeeding. Hyperprolactinemia may be idiopathic (of unknown cause) or due to pituitary adenomas (benign tumors of the pituitary gland in the brain).

There may be other uses of cabergoline, such as to treat Parkinson’s disease—your pharmacist or health care professional can give you further drug information.

Cabergoline Mechanism of Action

Cabergoline decreases the amount of prolactin in the body by binding to dopamine receptors.

Cabergoline Doses

Cabergoline comes as a 0.5 mg tablet to take by mouth. The recommended starting dose is 0.25 mg twice a week. This dose can be increased up to 1 mg twice a week. Your doctor will check serum prolactin levels and adjust the dose based on the results. Dose escalations are done at intervals of at least 4 weeks. If you have normal prolactin levels for 6 months, your healthcare provider may try stopping treatment to see how you do off cabergoline.
