Therapeutic Uses:

  • Low calcium levels and metabolic bone disease in people with severe chronic renal failure who are on chronic renal dialysis
  • Low calcium levels in people with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism (low parathyroid levels), postsurgical hypoparathyroidism, and pseudohypoparathyroidism
  • Secondary hyperparathyroidism (high parathyroid hormone levels) and metabolic bone disease in people with moderate to severe chronic renal failure who are not yet on dialysis

Calcitriol (kal-sih-try-ohl) is a vitamin D analog (active form of vitamin D).

Calcitriol Age Range

Calcitriol is approved for use in adults and children. However, the safety and effectiveness of this medication have not been established in pediatric patients undergoing dialysis. This medication may be used in pediatric patients with chronic renal failure who are not on dialysis based on safety and efficacy data in adults. There are no established dosing guidelines for pediatric patients under 1 year of age with hypoparathyroidism or pediatric patients under 6 years of age with pseudohypoparathyroidism.
