How should I take ciprofloxacin (Cipro)?

Take ciprofloxacin as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. This is a prescription medicine taken by mouth, usually twice a day. You can take ciprofloxacin with or without food. Take your medicine at roughly the same time every day.

Carefully follow the instructions on the prescription label. Take ciprofloxacin exactly as directed. Do not take a different dose or take this medicine more or less frequently than prescribed. Your doctor will tell you how long you should take ciprofloxacin. The duration of antibiotic treatment depends on the type of infection.

If you are taking the ciprofloxacin oral suspension, make sure you shake the bottle well before mixing the medicine.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a ciprofloxacin dose, take it as soon as you remember, provided it is no more than 6 hours from your scheduled time. However, if it is more than 6 hours or almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take multiple doses to make up for the missed dose. Do not take more than two doses of ciprofloxacin in one day.

Storage: Store ciprofloxacin at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Store ciprofloxacin suspension at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Do not freeze the oral suspension. Discard any unused oral suspension after 14 days. Keep all medications in a safe place out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unneeded or expired ciprofloxacin should be disposed of carefully. Do not flush medicines down the toilet. The best way to do it is through a medicine take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal of prescription medicines.
