How should I take clopidogrel (Plavix)?

Clopidogrel comes in the form of a tablet to be taken by mouth with water. You can take this medication with or without food. Take your clopidogrel oral tablet at around the same time every day.

Read the prescription label carefully and follow all dosing instructions. Do not take more or less of the medication than prescribed, or take it less or more often than advised by your doctor.

Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet agent that works as long as you take it. This medication protects you from serious problems related to the heart and blood vessels. Continue taking clopidogrel even if you feel well and have no symptoms. Do not stop taking clopidogrel without talking to your doctor first. Stopping clopidogrel too soon can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke

Missed dose: If you forget to take your clopidogrel dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose at the regular time. Do not double up on the dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store clopidogrel in the container it came in, tightly closed and away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep all over-the-counter and prescription drugs out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: The best way to dispose of any unused or expired clopidogrel is through a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
