Diphenoxylate-Atropine Side Effects

Possible side effects of diphenoxylate-atropine are listed below. Call your doctor if these side effects are severe or do not go away in a few days.

  • Headache
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Upset stomach, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion
  • Mood changes

Less commonly, diphenoxylate-atropine can cause very serious side effects. Seek immediate medical help if you develop the following symptoms:

  • Stomach bloating
  • Ongoing stomach pain that spreads to the back
  • Numbness in the arms and legs
  • Shortness of breath
  • Skin rash, hives, itching (signs of allergic reactions)
  • Swelling of the face, eyes, throat, tongue, lips, hands, lower legs, ankles, or feet
  • Hoarseness
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that do not exist)

The above list may not include all the potential adverse effects of diphenoxylate and atropine. Contact your doctor if the side effects are unusual or severe or they do not get better over time. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Diphenoxylate-Atropine Overdose: In case of an overdose of diphenoxylate-atropine, seek emergency medical help. You can call your local poison control center or the national poison control centers at 1-800-222-1222. If a person cannot be awakened, has trouble breathing, has collapsed, or has had a seizure, call 911. Signs and symptoms of a Lomotil overdose may include fever, flushing, fast heartbeat, dry mucous membranes, urinary retention (decreased urination), unusual eye movements, changes in pupil size, restlessness, excessive tiredness, problems with speaking, difficulty breathing, hallucinations, seizures, and loss of consciousness.
