Docusate (Colace) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Prior to using docusate, you should contact a healthcare provider if stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting are present or if a sudden change in bowel habits occurs and persists over 14 days. Docusate may not be the best medication for you, and your health professional should always rule out any serious condition.

  • Docusate (Colace) can be taken at any time of the day. You can attempt to schedule your dose so that you're close to a bathroom when it's time for your motion if you are aware of how your body reacts to the drug.

  • If you are presently taking mineral oil, you should avoid taking docusate unless your doctor instructs you to. Combining these two products can increase the amount of mineral oil absorbed by your body.

  • If you're taking the liquid form of docusate, shake well before using. Measure liquid docusate carefully using the dosing syringe provided or medicine dose-measuring device and not a kitchen spoon. You can ask your pharmacist if you need one.

  • There are a few additional methods for treating constipation. Always remember to drink plenty of water and other fluids to stay hydrated. To assist your body in having regular bowel movements, keep eating foods high in fiber.
