  • Available as both oral tablets, oral syrup/solution, and rectal suppositories/enema.
  • Docusate softens your stool, making them easier to pass.
  • Docusate is safe to use in children (docusate sodium).

  • It can take 1 to 3 days for docusate to produce a bowel movement.
  • It does not stimulate your bowels to move as other laxatives do. 
  • Docusate is advised to be used only short-term (less than 7 days).
  • Docusate is not a first-choice treatment option for chronic constipation.
  • This medication may not be suitable for some people, including those with a history of bowel obstruction, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, rectal bleeding, or those on a low-salt diet.
