How To Use Doxazosin (Cardura)

Doxazosin comes in the form of a tablet and extended-release tablet to take by mouth once daily. You can take the regular tablet with or without food in the morning or evening. The extended-release tablet should be taken with breakfast in the morning. Try to take your medication at the same time every day.

Do not chew, cut, or crush the extended-release tablet.

Read the prescription label and patient information leaflet carefully and take doxazosin exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose, dosage frequency, or treatment duration without talking to your doctor.

Your healthcare provider will start you on a lower dose of doxazosin and gradually increase the dose. Follow the dosing instructions carefully. This medication can control high blood pressure and BPH symptoms, but it does not cure the underlying conditions. It can take a few weeks to get the full benefit of doxazosin. Continue taking your medication regularly even if you don’t have any symptoms. Do not discontinue the medicine without talking to your doctor first.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of doxazosin, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose. If you miss a few days of doxazosin, talk to your doctor before you restart treatment. Your doctor may recommend restarting the medicine at a lower dose and slowly increasing the dose.

Storage: Store doxazosin at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused doxazosin should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw doxazosin in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded doxazosin is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
