Doxepin Uses

Doxepin hydrochloride is a tricyclic antidepressant. It is used to treat depression and anxiety.

There may be other uses of doxepin, such as for the treatment of insomnia (tablet form), chronic hives, and neuropathic pain. Topical doxepin works like topical antihistamines and may be used to relieve itching associated with certain types of eczema. Your doctor or health system pharmacists can give you further drug information on novel therapeutic usage.

Doxepin Mechanism of Action

Doxepin changes the amounts of certain natural substances that bind to human brain receptors in the central nervous system and help to maintain mental balance.

Doxepin Doses

Doxepin is available as 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, 75 mg, 100 mg, and 150 mg tablets and 10 mg/mL concentrated oral solution. The usual dose of doxepin is 75 mg to 150 mg daily. However, low-dose doxepin hydrochloride (25 mg to 50 mg daily) may be effective in people with mild symptoms. Doses up to 300 mg/day have been used to treat people with severe psychotic depressive disorders.
