Eliquis (apixaban) tips from pharmacists

  • You can take Eliquis with or without food. Try to take your medication at around the same time every day. Do not stop taking Eliquis even if you feel well. Early discontinuation of this medication can increase your risk of blood clots and stroke.

  • Tell your healthcare professionals you are on Eliquis before undergoing any elective surgery. Your doctors may ask you to stop taking Eliquis and switch you to some other medication to prevent blood clots during invasive procedures.

  • If you suffer an injury, especially a head injury, get in touch with your doctor without delay, especially if you have symptoms such as dizziness or headache, which can indicate a brain bleed.

  • Eliquis can interact with other medications, including over-the-counter medicines like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Give your doctor a complete list of your medications to prevent dangerous drug interactions.
