What are Eliquis (apixaban) side effects?

Eliquis prevents blood from clotting and increases your bleeding risk (it can take longer for you to stop bleeding after cuts and injuries while you are on this medication). This medicine can cause clinically significant bleeding, including potentially fatal bleeding. Call your doctor right away if you experience any adverse reactions such as unusual bleeding or symptoms of active bleeding, including: 

  • Bleeding from the gums
  • Nosebleeds
  • Coughing up blood
  • Vomiting blood or material resembling coffee grounds
  • Pink, red, or brown urine
  • Blood-tinged or black, tarry stools
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Joint pain or swelling
  • Rash
  • Headache
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Trouble breathing, wheezing
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Swelling of the face or tongue

The above list may not include all the potential side effects of Eliquis. Contact your healthcare professional without delay if you have any bleeding problems while on this medication. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Eliquis Overdose: In case of a known or suspected overdose, immediately call your healthcare professional or the local poison control center. Signs and symptoms of an Eliquis overdose may include unusual bleeding, red/pink/brown urine, dark tarry stools, coughing up blood, or vomiting up blood or material that looks like coffee grounds.
