How To Use FreeStyle Libre 2

FreeStyle Libre 2 consists of patient-applied sensors and a reading device or smartphone app to record glucose levels. The sensor is applied to the skin at the back of your upper arm. FreeStyle Libre 2 gives you real-time glucose levels and also allows your healthcare provider to review glucose data over time and make treatment decisions based on glycaemic control. Here are some tips on using this system:

  • Inserting the sensor: The FreeStyle Libre 14-day sensor is a single-use coin-sized sensor and sits just below the top layer of your skin. It is applied using an applicator that comes with the sensor. You should clean your skin with an alcohol wipe, remove the sensor from its packaging, and push it down firmly to apply it. The application process is painless for most people, but individual patients may experience mild discomfort and skin irritation.
  • Using the reader: After applying a new sensor, press the home button on the reader to turn it on and choose “start new sensor.” Then, hold the reader 1.5 inches above the sensor and choose the “check blood glucose” symbol to get your blood glucose level at any time of the day without a fingerstick blood sample. You can also use a smartphone app to check the reading. Follow the directions in the app. Wait at least one hour after applying a new sensor before taking a reading. The reader is rechargeable and comes with a USB cable and power adapter.
  • Real-time alarms: FreeStyle Libre 2 allows you to automatically receive alarms when your blood glucose is at dangerous levels.
  • Disposal: Put the lid back on a used applicator and throw it away in a yellow biohazard bag. The used sensors can be disposed of like batteries.

Missed  application: If you forget to change out your FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor, do it as soon as you remember. The sensor automatically stops working after 14 days and will no longer give you accurate glucose levels.

Storage: Safely store sensor kit at 36 – 82°F and 10-90% non-condensing humidity away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Do not store medications or medical devices in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications and medical devices safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unneeded FreeStyle Libre 2 should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to it. Do not throw FreeStyle Libre 2 in the trash. The best way to dispose of unneeded FreeStyle Libre 2 is through your local waste disposal company or a medical device take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
