Hydrochlorothiazide tips from pharmacists

  • Hydrochlorothiazide makes you urinate more than usual. Taking hydrochlorothiazide in the morning is recommended. This will make it less likely that you will have to get up in the middle of the night to pee.

  • This medicine starts working around 2 hours after taking it; the effects last approximately 12 hours.

  • Hydrochlorothiazide can cause dizziness as a side effect. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how this medicine affects you. Arise slowly from a sitting or lying position to prevent dizziness.

  • Wear protective clothing and sunscreen while on hydrochlorothiazide, as this medicine can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.

  • If you have diabetes, you may need to check your blood sugar levels more frequently while on hydrochlorothiazide.
