How To Use Hyoscyamine

Hyoscyamine comes in the form of a tablet, sublingual tablet, orally disintegrating tablet, extended-release tablet, liquid, and oral drops to take by mouth. The immediate-release tablets and liquid forms of the medicine are usually taken 3-4 times a day. The extended-release hyoscyamine tablets are taken twice a day.

Take the regular tablets with water. Place the sublingual tablets or orally disintegrating tablets under your tongue and allow them to dissolve. Swallow the extended-release tablets whole without cutting, crushing, or chewing them. Measure the liquid forms of hyoscyamine using a dose measuring device (spoon or dropper) and not a common kitchen spoon.

Read the prescription label carefully. Take only that dose prescribed by your doctor. Do not take hyoscyamine more frequently than directed.

Hyoscyamine will help to control your symptoms but will not cure your condition. Continue taking the medication even if you feel well. Do not stop hyoscyamine without talking to your doctor first.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of hyoscyamine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double or extra doses to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store hyoscyamine at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused hyoscyamine should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw hyoscyamine in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded hyoscyamine is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
