Levetiracetam (Keppra) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Your doctor will likely start you on a lower dose of levetiracetam and adjust the dose based on your clinical response. Follow the dosage adjustment instructions carefully and take the medicine as prescribed.

  • Do not cut, crush, or chew the extended-release tablets.

  • Brand name Keppra XR comes as 500 mg and 750 mg tablets. Elepsia XR comes as 1,000 mg and 1,500 mg tablets. Check the label of the extended-release tablet and make sure you’re taking the correct dose.

  • Use a dose measuring device (cup or syringe) to measure the dose of liquid levetiracetam.

  • Call your doctor without delay if you notice any changes in mood or behavior while on this medicine.

  • Levetiracetam can cause sleepiness and dizziness. Do not drive or perform other activities that require alertness until you know how this medicine affects you.

  • Do not suddenly stop taking levetiracetam without talking to your doctor first. This can lead to withdrawal seizures.
