What are the pros and cons of Lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril)?

  • Lisinopril is an effective blood pressure medicine and is considered the first-line therapy for the treatment of high blood pressure in many people.
  • Lisinopril has a protective effect on the kidneys that is beneficial for people with mild to moderate kidney disease.
  • Lisinopril is proven to improve life expectancy after a heart attack.

  • Roughly 1 in 10 people develop a persistent, dry cough from lisinopril.  This can range from a tickle in the throat to a bothersome hacking cough that does not go away.
  • Lisinopril can cause birth defects in a baby, especially if being taken during the second or third trimester. 
  • Lisinopril, or ACE inhibitors in general, are typically less effective as monotherapy in black patients.
