How To Use Minoxidil

Apply minoxidil to the area of hair loss on your scalp. Follow the directions on the package carefully.

Massage minoxidil topical into your scalp with your fingers twice a day. Wash your hands afterward to remove any residual medicine. Applying more of this medication or doing so more frequently than recommended will not cause faster hair growth and may cause side effects.

Apply the medicine to a completely dry scalp. Do not apply minoxidil if your scalp is irritated or sunburned. Check with your doctor before using minoxidil if you have a medical problem that affects the scalp or a diagnosis of hair disorders.

Do not swallow topical minoxidil. Do not use the medicine on any other part of your body, as it can result in unwanted hair growth. Keep the medicine away from your eyes, nose, mouth, and other sensitive areas. If any part of your body other than your scalp comes in contact with topical minoxidil, wash it with cool water. Call your doctor if you develop irritation in the area. Do not apply any bandages, dressings, lotions, or other skin medications in the treated area unless your doctor tells you to.

Minoxidil topical solution may come with special applicators, such as a rub-on applicator, extender spray applicator, or metered spray applicator. Make sure you understand how to use these applicators. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure how to use this medicine.

It can take anywhere from 2 to 4 months or more to see a noticeable difference in hair growth after starting minoxidil therapy. Continue using topical minoxidil even if you don’t notice an immediate improvement in hair growth. Any new hair growth will be lost within a few months of stopping this medicine.

Missed dose: If you miss an application of minoxidil, do it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra medicine to make up for a missed application.

Storage: Store topical minoxidil at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired topical minoxidil should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw minoxidil in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded minoxidil is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program.
