How To Use Moxifloxacin (Vigamox)

Moxifloxacin comes in the form of an ophthalmic solution (eye drops) to be applied to the affected eye 2-3 times a day for 7 days.

Read the prescription label and patient information leaflet provided with your medicine carefully. Use moxifloxacin eye drops exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use more than one drop or use the medicine more frequently or for a longer period than prescribed without your doctor’s approval.

You should notice an improvement in your eye symptoms within a couple of days of starting treatment. Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or get worse.

Finish the prescribed course of antibiotic treatment even if your symptoms are no longer present. Stopping treatment too soon can result in incomplete treatment of your infection, causing it to come back and making your symptoms worse. Incomplete treatment of bacterial infections can also make it harder to treat future infections because the bacteria become resistant to antibiotics.

Take care to avoid contamination of the dropper and bottle of medicine. Before applying moxifloxacin, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying the eye drops. Make sure the dropper tip is intact. Do not touch the dropper to your eye, surrounding skin, or any other surface. Tilt your head back and pull your lower eyelid down to make a small pocket. Squeeze one drop of the medicine into this pocket, close the eye, apply gentle pressure, and tilt your head down for a couple of minutes. Replace the dropper in the bottle. Do not rinse or wash the dropper. Wash your hands to remove any remaining medicine. Wait at least 5 minutes before instilling any other eye drop.

Missed dose: If you forget a dose of moxifloxacin, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and use the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store moxifloxacin eye drops at room temperature (between 2-25°C or 36-77°F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired moxifloxacin should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw moxifloxacin in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded moxifloxacin is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
