Nortriptyline Uses

Nortriptyline hydrochloride is a tricyclic antidepressant and it is used to treat depression.

There may be other uses of nortriptyline, such as to treat panic attacks and postherpetic neuralgia or to help with smoking cessation. Your doctor or pharmacist can give you further drug information.

Nortriptyline Mechanism of Action

Nortriptyline increases the amount of certain natural substances like serotonin and norepinephrine in the central nervous system. These natural substances help to maintain mental balance. 

Nortriptyline Doses

Nortriptyline is available as 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, and 75 mg tablets and 10 mg/5 mL oral solution. The usual adult dose of nortriptyline is 25 mg three to four times a day. As an alternative to the divided doses, the total daily dose may be given once a day. The maximum dose of nortriptyline is 150 mg per day.
