Nystatin tips from pharmacists

  • If you experience gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach bloating, or stomach pain, try taking nystatin with food - this might help.

  • Shake the bottle well before taking the oral suspension.

  • If you are taking liquid nystatin, always use the dose-measuring device (dose cup, special dose-measuring spoon, or dosing syringe provided) to measure liquid medicine (nystatin oral suspension). Using a household spoon can lead to the wrong doses.

  • If you are unsure how to swish and swallow, ask your pharmacist to explain. You might need to gargle the oral suspension before swallowing if you have a thrush infection in the back of your mouth.

  • Do not stop taking nystatin if your symptoms disappear. It is important to complete treatment to ensure clinical cure and prevent further infection.

  • If you are using the oral suspension in babies, try to paint the inside of the mouth as much as possible with the medicine. Don’t feed the baby immediately after giving nystatin.
