Directions

How should I take paroxetine (Paxil)?

Take paroxetine as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. This medicine is to be taken orally (by mouth) with water. The oral tablet, controlled-release tablet, and oral suspension are usually taken once a day in the morning. The oral capsule is usually taken once a day at bedtime. You can take paroxetine with or without food. However, taking it with food can help prevent side effects like an upset stomach.

Swallow it whole if you are taking the controlled release (extended-release) tablet. Do not crush, break, or chew it. If you are taking the oral suspension, shake the bottle before use. The paroxetine oral capsule contains a lower dose of the medicine, and you cannot substitute it for the oral tablet.

Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct paroxetine dosage and frequency. Take your medicine regularly at around the same time every day. Do not take more or less medication or take it more or less frequently than prescribed.

It can take several weeks for you to feel the full effects of paroxetine. This medicine will control your symptoms but will not cure the condition. Continue taking paroxetine even if you feel well. Do not stop taking this medication without talking to your doctor first. Suddenly stopping paroxetine can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as depression, mood changes, abnormal excitement, anxiety, irritability, confusion, headaches, dizziness, numbness, tingling, unusual dreams, sleep difficulties, sweating, and nausea. Your doctor will reduce your dose gradually. Tell your doctor if you experience any such symptoms after decreasing your paroxetine dose.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of paroxetine, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store paroxetine at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused paroxetine. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medicines is through a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
