How To Use Prednisolone Acetate

Prednisolone ophthalmic comes in the form of a liquid solution or suspension. Use prednisolone as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Do not use more or less of this medication than instructed. Do not stop using the medicine suddenly.

To use prednisolone eye drops, you should:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water.
  • Shake the bottle well.
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip to anything, including your hands or your eye. A contaminated dropper can lead to an eye infection.
  • Stay in an upright position, tilt your head back and pull the lower eyelid down with your finger to create a small pocket.
  • Hold the tip of the eye dropper near this pocket without touching the eye and squeeze so that a single drop falls into the pocket in the lower eyelid.
  • Gently close your eye, apply gentle pressure, and look down at the floor. Try not to blink for a couple of minutes.
  • Wipe excess liquid from your face.
  • Wait at least 5 minutes before putting another drop if you are supposed to use two drops.
  • Replace the dropper in the bottle. Do not rinse it.
  • Wash your hands to remove any medication.

Missed dose: If you forget to use prednisolone ophthalmic, use the eye drop as soon as you remember and then give yourself the other doses that day at evenly spaced out intervals. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and use the eye drops at your regularly scheduled time. Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store prednisolone acetate at room temperature (between 8°C to 24°C (46°F to 75°F)away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused prednisolone acetate. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medicines is through your local waste disposal company or a medication take-back program. Learn more about  proper medication disposal
