How should I take Prednisone?

Take prednisone as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. This medicine is to be taken orally (by mouth) with food one to four times a day or once every other day. Your doctor will give you a dosing schedule based on your condition and how you respond to prednisone treatment.

Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct prednisone dosage and frequency. Do not take more or less prednisone or take it more or less frequently than prescribed. Do not stop taking prednisone without talking to your doctor first.

If you take the concentrated prednisone solution, measure the dose with the special dropper that came with your medication. You can mix the concentrated solution in juice or applesauce.

If you take the delayed-release formulation of prednisone (Rayos), swallow the tablet whole. Do not chew or crush it.

Missed dose: Ask your doctor what to do if you miss a dose of prednisone. Write down the instructions carefully. Do not double up on your prednisone dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store prednisone in a tightly closed container away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep all over-the-counter and prescription drugs out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: You should not flush expired or unneeded prednisone down the toilet. The best way to dispose of prednisone is through a medicine take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
