What is prednisone used for?

Prednisone is a corticosteroid. It is used to treat a wide range of conditions in different parts of the body. This medication is used to treat symptoms of low corticosteroid levels. It is also used in people with normal corticosteroid levels to treat conditions affecting the eyes, skin, lungs, kidneys, joints, thyroid, blood, stomach, and intestines.

How does prednisone work?

Prednisone works by decreasing inflammation and suppressing the immune system.

What are prednisone doses?

Prednisone tablets come in doses of 1 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, and 50 mg. This medication is also available as a 5 mg/mL oral solution. Prednisone dose packs have 21 or 48 tablets of the 5-mg or 10-mg dose.

The dose of prednisone can range from 5 mg to 60 mg per day by mouth. The dose depends on the condition being treated.
