  • Most people tolerate Prilosec (omeprazole) well without severe side effects.
  • Proton pump inhibitors (both prescription and OTC) provide longer-lasting relief than other OTC antacid medications like Tums or Pepcid.
  • Both adults and children can take Prilosec. Please consult your child's pediatrician regarding the dosing and appropriateness of Prilosec for your child.
  • Prilosec is available with a prescription as well as over-the-counter. There is also a generic option (omeprazole).
  • Prilosec granules or powder for suspension can be mixed with water and is easier to swallow for people who have trouble swallowing pills.

  • Prilosec is not a good option for immediate relief from heartburn. Unlike other heartburn medicines like Tums, Maalox, or Rolaids, which work immediately, Prilosec can take up to 4 days to start working.
  • Prilosec needs to be taken on an empty stomach at least an hour before meals to be most effective.
  • Long-term use of Prilosec can lead to low magnesium or vitamin B12 levels, weak bones (osteoporosis), and small growths (polyps) in the stomach lining.
  • Prilosec passes into breast milk and may not be appropriate for nursing mothers.
