What are the pros and cons of Prilosec (omeprazole)?
Most people tolerate Prilosec (omeprazole) well without severe side effects.
Proton pump inhibitors (both prescription and OTC) provide longer-lasting relief than other OTC antacid medications like Tums or Pepcid.
Both adults and children can take Prilosec. Please consult your child's pediatrician regarding the dosing and appropriateness of Prilosec for your child.
Prilosec is available with a prescription as well as over-the-counter. There is also a generic option (omeprazole).
Prilosec granules or powder for suspension can be mixed with water and is easier to swallow for people who have trouble swallowing pills.
Prilosec is not a good option for immediate relief from heartburn. Unlike other heartburn medicines like Tums, Maalox, or Rolaids, which work immediately, Prilosec can take up to 4 days to start working.
Prilosec needs to be taken on an empty stomach at least an hour before meals to be most effective.
Long-term use of Prilosec can lead to low magnesium or vitamin B12 levels, weak bones (osteoporosis), and small growths (polyps) in the stomach lining.
Prilosec passes into breast milk and may not be appropriate for nursing mothers.
