Directions

How should I take Prozac (fluoxetine)?

Take Prozac as directed by your physician and/or pharmacist. This medicine is to be taken orally (by mouth) with water. It is usually taken once every day in the morning or twice a day - in the morning and at noon. You can take Prozac with or without food. When fluoxetine (Sarafem) is used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder, it may be taken every day or only on certain days of the month. If you take the delayed-release capsule, swallow it whole - do not break, chew, or crush it.

Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct Prozac dosage and frequency. Take your medicine regularly at around the same time every day. Do not take more or less medication or take it more frequently or less frequently than prescribed.

It can take 4-6 weeks or longer for you to feel the full effects of this medication. Continue taking it even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Prozac without talking to your doctor first. Abruptly stopping Prozac can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, agitation, mood changes, anxiety, dizziness, sweating, confusion, numbness and tingling in the hands or feet, headache, fatigue, and sleep problems. If you wish to come off Prozac, your doctor will probably reduce your dose gradually.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of Prozac, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store Prozac at room temperature (between 15-30°C or 59-86°F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused Prozac. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of the medicine is through a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
