How To Use Phenazopyridine (Pyridium)

Phenazopyridine HCl comes in the form of an oral tablet to be taken by mouth with water three times a day after meals. You should take this medicine with a full glass of water to avoid staining your teeth. Do not crush or chew the tablets as this can leave stains on your teeth.

Phenazopyridine is available in a higher strength by prescription and in a lower strength without a prescription. Follow your doctor’s dosing instructions and read the package label carefully. Use phenazopyridine exactly as directed. Do not take a higher or lower dose of this medicine or take it more or less frequently than your doctor prescribes or indicated on the package.

Phenazopyridine is for short-term symptomatic relief of UTI symptoms. Stop taking phenazopyridine as soon as your symptoms disappear. Do not take this medicine for more than 2 days without talking to a healthcare professional. Phenazopyridine can mask the symptoms of a worsening infection and lead to a delay in the diagnosis and appropriate treatment of an underlying condition.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of phenazopyridine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store phenazopyridine at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused phenazopyridine HCl should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw phenazopyridine in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded phenazopyridine is through a drug take-back program.
