How To Use Spironolactone

Spironolactone comes in the form of a tablet and oral suspension to be taken by mouth once or twice a day as prescribed. You can take spironolactone with or without food, but you should do so consistently. Try to take your medicine at approximately the same time every day.

Follow the dosing instructions on your prescription label carefully and take spironolactone exactly as prescribed. Do not take a higher or lower dose or take it more or less often than advised by your doctor.

Shake the bottle of the spironolactone suspension well before use each time. Use a dosing cup or syringe and not a household spoon to measure the dose accurately.

The different forms of spironolactone are not interchangeable. Do not switch from the tablets to the oral suspension without talking to your healthcare provider.

Your provider will likely start you on a low initial dose of the medicine and slowly increase the dose. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully.

Spironolactone may help to control your blood pressure, heart failure, edema, or hyperaldosteronism, but it will not cure these conditions. It can take 2 weeks or longer for you to notice a difference in your symptoms after starting spironolactone. Continue taking the medicine even if you don’t have any symptoms and feel well. Do not discontinue spironolactone without talking to your healthcare provider.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of spironolactone, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store spironolactone at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine:  Unused spironolactone should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw spironolactone in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded spironolactone is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
