Suprep Uses

Suprep is an osmotic laxative that causes watery bowel movements. It is used to empty the bowels before a colonoscopy exam and give healthcare providers a clear view of the bowel walls.

There may be other uses of this medicine—your healthcare provider or pharmacist can give you further Suprep drug information.

Suprep Mechanism of Action

Suprep contains sulfate salts of magnesium, potassium, and sodium, which are poorly absorbed in the large intestine. These salts cause water to be retained in the gastrointestinal tract due to their osmotic effect. This causes watery bowel movements and cleanses the bowels, making it easier for doctors to view the walls of the colon (large intestine) during a colonoscopy procedure.

Suprep Doses

Suprep is available as a liquid solution to take by mouth. It is taken as a 2-dose regimen, with one dose on the evening before and the second dose on the morning of the colonoscopy exam. Each kit contains:

For adults: Two 6-ounce bottles of Suprep and a 16-ounce mixing container

For children 12 years of age and above: Two 4.5-ounce bottles of Suprep and a 12-ounce container
