  • While topiramate can help with migraine prevention, it does not stop a migraine headache after it has begun.
  • Adverse effects of topiramate include serious eye problems, kidney stone formation, osteoporosis, and metabolic acidosis.
  • Topiramate can lead to congenital malformations such as oral clefts in the fetus, and this medicine is not safe for use during pregnancy. You must be on effective birth control during topiramate therapy to prevent pregnancy.
  • This antiepileptic drug can affect a child’s growth and prevent height and weight gain.
