How To Use Urea

Urea comes in various forms such as creams, gels, lotions, foams, and emulsions. This medicine works best if it is applied to damp skin, for example, after a shower or bath.

Do not apply urea products to skin that is inflamed, broken, burned, or shows signs of infection. This medicine is for external use only. Do not apply it inside the mouth or other body cavities. Be careful when using it near sensitive areas like the eyes and lips.

Generally speaking, you should apply a thin film of urea on the affected area twice a day. However, be sure to read the patient information leaflet carefully and follow the instructions for the specific product.

If you are using urea to remove a damaged or diseased nail, apply it liberally on the nail while avoiding nearby skin. You can leave the nail uncovered or wrap it with a sterile gauze or adhesive bandage. The nail will come off in several days, and the nail bed will harden in 12-36 hours.

Missed dose: If you miss an application of urea, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and apply the next dose according to your regular schedule. Do not apply extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store urea at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused urea should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw urea in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded urea is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal
